From Da Vinci to the Connecticut River: The Science of Drainage Networks
Peter A. Raymond, Ph.D. Peter Raymond’s work has taken him to study estuaries around the world as well as in our backyard. For centuries scholars have been fascinated by the geometry of watersheds. More recently, this geometry has led scientists to conceptualize how a watershed operates as a system transporting nutrients and elements such as nitrogen, phosphorous, and carbon between land, air and water to its ultimate destination . . . the oceans. In this talk, Dr. Raymond will introduce some of the ways in which scientists use watershed geometry to predict watershed behavior and he will focus on how carbon is transported to and through the Connecticut River during storms. Associate Dean of Research and Professor of Doctoral Studies at the Yale School of the Environment, Dr. Raymond is also Professor of Ecosystem Ecology and has served as a science advisor to the Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center.
